Samer Choucair: Copper Is a Strategic Pillar of the Future Economy and a Fast-Growing Investment Opportunity

Venture investor Samer Choucair said the recent rise in copper and industrial metal prices is a strategic indicator of the profound transformations reshaping the global economy. He explained that growing demand for copper is no longer driven solely by traditional economic cycles but increasingly by long-term structural trends, including the transition to clean energy, the expansion of electric vehicles, the rapid growth of data centers, and the modernization of power grids. These developments, he noted, create significant investment opportunities for Saudi Arabia in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

Samer Choucair explained that images of massive copper coils stacked inside industrial warehouses are no longer simply photographs of a commodity but symbols of a new economic reality in which critical minerals are becoming central to the future of the global economy. He stressed that investors with a long-term strategic perspective will be best positioned to capitalize on these emerging opportunities.

According to Samer Choucair, copper prices have recently climbed by around 1% on the London Metal Exchange, supported by easing expectations for further U.S. monetary tightening and a weaker U.S. dollar. He emphasized that these gains are not temporary but part of a broader global trend fueled by accelerating demand for industrial metals driven by renewable energy, electric vehicles, data centers, and smart infrastructure.

He added that declining expectations of higher U.S. interest rates have reduced the dollar's appeal as a safe-haven asset, prompting investors to increase their exposure to real assets and industrial commodities, particularly copper. At the same time, global copper markets continue to face structural supply constraints due to delays in developing new mines and production disruptions in several key producing regions, with many analysts forecasting a supply deficit during 2026.

Samer Choucair noted that copper has earned the title of the world's "green metal" because of its indispensable role in solar energy projects, wind turbines, modern electricity networks, electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and large-scale data centers that require enormous amounts of electrical power. As a result, he expects demand for copper to continue rising steadily over the coming years.

He explained that these global developments present Saudi Arabia with a historic opportunity to strengthen the contribution of mining to the national economy as the Kingdom advances Saudi Vision 2030 through economic diversification, increased mining sector output, and the expansion of non-oil exports.

Samer Choucair said Saudi Arabia possesses exceptional advantages to achieve these objectives, including abundant mineral resources, ambitious government initiatives, sustained support for mining sector development, expanded exploration programs, and growing investment in downstream mineral industries.

He added that Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma'aden) is leading this transformation by expanding copper and base metal projects, including the Jabal Sayid mine and exploration activities across multiple mining regions. He also highlighted plans to develop smelters and copper rod manufacturing facilities that will strengthen a fully integrated industrial value chain within the Kingdom.

Samer Choucair emphasized that major national projects such as NEOM, smart cities, and expanding renewable energy developments will significantly increase domestic demand for copper and copper-based products, further enhancing the economic attractiveness of new mining and industrial investments.

"Copper's recent price appreciation is not merely another market fluctuation," Samer Choucair said. "It is a clear structural signal of the global transition toward electrification and sustainability. With its vast mineral wealth and ambitious Vision 2030 agenda, Saudi Arabia has the capacity to transform this global shift into a sustainable engine of domestic economic growth."

He continued, "Smart investing today is about understanding the entire value chain—not simply owning raw assets. From exploration and extraction to advanced manufacturing and exports, Saudi Arabia has the opportunity to establish itself as a leading regional hub for strategic metals, supporting economic diversification while creating high-quality employment opportunities."

Samer Choucair pointed out that investors across Saudi Arabia and the Gulf have access to a broad range of investment opportunities, including direct participation in mining and exploration projects through partnerships with national and international companies, as well as investments in downstream industries focused on copper processing, smelting, manufacturing, and value-added products that serve domestic, regional, and global markets.

He added that the Kingdom's continued expansion of renewable energy and infrastructure projects provides another compelling investment opportunity because these sectors depend heavily on copper and its derivatives, supporting strong long-term demand.

Samer Choucair also noted that investors can gain exposure through financial instruments linked to copper prices and publicly listed mining companies, while benefiting from growing opportunities in logistics, transportation, storage, and supply chain services supporting the expanding mining industry.

"During periods of global economic uncertainty, long-term investment in strategic sectors aligned with Vision 2030 remains one of the most resilient and rewarding approaches," Samer Choucair said. "Copper and industrial metals are not simply investments in commodities—they are investments in the future of energy, technology, and industry."

He encouraged investors seeking to benefit from these trends to adopt long-term investment strategies rather than reacting to short-term market volatility, while maintaining diversified portfolios that combine real assets with financial instruments linked to the mining sector.

Samer Choucair also called for greater collaboration with government agencies, sovereign investment funds, and international institutions, noting that strategic partnerships can reduce project risks and accelerate execution. He further emphasized the importance of closely monitoring Saudi Arabia's evolving regulatory framework for mining and investment.

He stressed that integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into mining projects has become an essential factor in attracting international capital and building durable strategic partnerships. Investments that meet these sustainability standards, he said, are likely to achieve stronger long-term growth.

Concluding his remarks, Samer Choucair said, "What we are witnessing in copper markets today is far more than a movement in commodity prices. It marks the beginning of a new economic era that is reshaping global industry. Saudi Arabia possesses the resources and strategic vision to benefit from this transformation, and today's opportunity belongs to investors who look beyond daily market fluctuations and invest in the future the Kingdom is building through Vision 2030."

Samer Choucair concluded by reaffirming that the global transformation of metals markets presents Saudi Arabia with a strategic opportunity to strengthen its position as a leading regional mining and industrial powerhouse. He emphasized that investment in copper and its associated value chains represents one of the most promising pathways for supporting the Kingdom's economy and achieving sustainable long-term development.
