Samer Choucair: The Energy Transition in the Region Opens a New Phase of Investment in Green Infrastructure

A single project in Morocco — 300 megawatts of pumped hydro storage, 265 million dollars in World Bank financing, and the capacity to cut 1.7 million tons of annual carbon emissions — carries investment lessons that extend well beyond North Africa. Investment entrepreneur Samer Choucair issued a press statement affirming that the "Ifchaa" pumped hydro energy storage project represents an advanced model of the energy transition in the region, reflecting simultaneously an accelerating global trend toward strengthening storage capacities and integrating renewable energy sources within more flexible, sustainable electrical grids.

He explained that the project, which is expected to create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase and stimulate private investments of roughly one billion dollars, reflects the deep transformation in the energy concept, where renewable energy is no longer just about production, but has come to rely fundamentally on smart storage systems to ensure stability and efficiency.

He affirmed that the visual landscape associated with solar energy projects in desert environments reflects the genuine shift in development philosophy, where arid regions are transforming into clean energy production hubs, through integrating solar panels with storage technologies and advanced infrastructure, redefining the relationship between geography and economics.

He added that Morocco is moving steadily toward the goal of raising renewable energy's share to roughly 64% of installed capacity by 2030, and that the Ifchaa project forms a pivotal element in this strategy, because it addresses the fundamental challenge tied to solar and wind energy production variability, by providing storage solutions capable of supporting national grid stability.

*Saudi Arabia's Position in the Regional Energy Picture*

In the context of regional comparison, Choucair explained that Saudi Arabia represents in turn one of the most prominent global models of the energy transition within Vision 2030's framework, through major projects in solar energy, green hydrogen, and developing future cities such as NEOM, the Red Sea, and Diriyah, noting that integration between production, storage, and export is the decisive element in the success of any modern energy system.

He affirmed that advanced regional experiences, such as the Ifchaa project, offer important lessons that can be benefited from in developing the Kingdom's energy system, particularly regarding the importance of investing in storage infrastructure and smart grids, as a fundamental factor in attracting private investments and ensuring major projects' sustainability.

Choucair said that the energy transition is no longer just an environmental option, but has become a key economic and investment driver reshaping global investment maps, explaining that projects combining renewable energy, storage, and green financing have become among the most capital-attractive sectors for international capital.

*Where the Investment Opportunities Lie*

In his investment opportunity analysis, he noted that the period ahead will see major expansion in multiple fields encompassing hydro storage and large battery projects, smart grid development, investment in companies specialized in energy management technologies, in addition to sustainable financing instruments such as green bonds and sukuk.

He added that opportunities aren't limited to direct infrastructure, but extend to a complete ecosystem encompassing engineering, construction, and operations companies, AI startups for grid management, in addition to technology transfer between regional markets, particularly between Gulf states and North Africa.

He affirmed that investors adopting a long-term vision are best positioned to benefit from this transformation, stressing that investing in clean energy is no longer a specialized sector, but has become an essential part of balanced global investment portfolios seeking to combine financial return with sustainability.

He concluded his press statement by affirming that the energy transition in the region represents a historic opportunity to reshape the regional economy on more sustainable, resilient foundations, and that the coming years will see accelerating projects connecting renewable energy, storage, and financial markets, opening new horizons for investors in Saudi Arabia and the broader region within the global path toward a low-carbon economy.
