Samer Choucair: Defensive Stocks Guide Investment Strategy on the Kuwait Stock Exchange Amid Regional Tensions

Entrepreneur Samer Choucair said recent developments on the Kuwait Stock Exchange reflect a growing investor shift toward defensive stocks, particularly in the telecommunications, education, and healthcare sectors, as these companies are considered better positioned to generate stable cash flows amid continuing geopolitical uncertainty across the region.

Choucair explained that this trend is consistent with research reports issued by Kuwait Investment Company, which identified rising investor interest in sectors supported by stable demand, alongside weaker appetite for activities that are more sensitive to economic and geopolitical volatility.

He added that Gulf markets have become more mature in their approach to risk management. Regional tensions no longer necessarily trigger broad market sell-offs, but instead encourage investors to reallocate liquidity toward companies with strong financial positions, effective governance, and stable dividend policies.

Samer Choucair noted that telecommunications, education, and healthcare are closely linked to domestic demand and essential services, giving them greater capacity to preserve revenue levels during periods of economic volatility.

This makes them particularly attractive to institutional investors and asset managers.

Choucair emphasized that the strength of Kuwait’s banking sector, together with the country’s substantial financial reserves, has reinforced the market’s resilience to external developments.

Investors also remain focused on companies capable of delivering sustainable growth and consistent cash distributions.

He added that investors are placing greater emphasis on the quality of cash flows and the sustainability of business models rather than pursuing short-term gains, reflecting a more advanced approach to capital allocation across Gulf markets.

Samer Choucair explained that continuing economic-diversification programmes across the Gulf, led by Saudi Vision 2030, are supporting the appeal of sectors linked to essential services and the digital economy while strengthening long-term investment opportunities in companies with solid fundamentals.

He noted that any improvement in geopolitical conditions could revive investor appetite for sectors more closely associated with economic growth. Defensive stocks, however, are likely to remain a central component of investment portfolios because of their ability to balance stability with returns.

Concluding his remarks, Samer Choucair emphasized that success in uncertain environments depends on building diversified portfolios centred on companies with sound governance and sustainable cash flows.

He added that Gulf markets possess strong foundations for attracting further institutional investment as economic reforms continue and capital-market efficiency improves.
