Samer Choucair: The Volkswagen Crisis Opens New Investment Opportunities for the Saudi Auto Industry*
Investment entrepreneur Samer Choucair affirmed that the changes Volkswagen is studying, which include closing up to four factories in Germany and cutting up to 100,000 jobs worldwide, reflect a structural shift in the global automotive industry, not just a temporary crisis, noting that these developments create promising investment opportunities for countries with a long-term industrial vision, led by Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate the proposals remain under study and haven't been finally approved by the relevant authorities within the company.
He explained that the pressures facing European auto companies are represented by growing competition from Chinese companies, rising production and energy costs, and slowing demand in some markets, alongside the costs tied to the shift toward electric vehicles, pushing global companies to reconsider production locations and supply chains.
He added that the Kingdom possesses strong fundamentals to benefit from this shift, thanks to Vision 2030's targets aimed at building an integrated automotive industry, attracting global companies, and developing an ecosystem encompassing manufacturing, modern technologies, and supply chains, backed by government investment and advanced infrastructure.
Choucair said: "What's happening in Europe represents an opportunity for countries that have succeeded in preparing an attractive investment environment. Saudi Arabia today possesses competitive elements including strategic location, investment incentives, and special economic zones, qualifying it to attract more industrial investment in the coming years."
He noted that among the most prominent industrial projects in the Kingdom is the Lucid plant, in addition to the joint venture between Hyundai Motor and the Public Investment Fund, which targets producing roughly 50,000 cars annually upon commercial operation, with investments exceeding 500 million dollars, strengthening the building of a local industrial base for the automotive sector.
He concluded by affirming that investors should focus on opportunities tied to electric vehicles, battery components, supply chains, and smart technologies, while diversifying investment portfolios and following new industrial partnerships, explaining that the current global shifts could give Saudi Arabia an opportunity to strengthen its position as a regional hub for the automotive industry and future technologies, if it continues implementing Vision 2030's targets at its current pace.
