Samer Choucair: China’s Rural Football League Opens New Opportunities for Sports-Tourism Investment
Entrepreneur Samer Choucair said China’s “Village Super League,” known as Cun Chao, represents an innovative economic model demonstrating the ability of community sport to stimulate local growth and create sustainable investment opportunities.
He noted that global capital is increasingly moving toward projects capable of generating both economic and social returns.
Choucair explained that the tournament, launched in 2023 in Rongjiang County in Guizhou Province, developed from an amateur competition into a platform supporting domestic tourism and the rural economy.
According to official Chinese data, Rongjiang welcomed millions of visitors and generated more than 8.4 billion yuan in tourism revenue during 2023.
Tourism and economic activity continued to grow over the following two years, although no unified final official figures have confirmed that revenue exceeded 10 billion yuan. It is therefore more accurate to refer to continued growth rather than cite an unverified total.
Samer Choucair added that the tournament’s success extended far beyond sporting activity.
It stimulated hospitality, restaurants, handicrafts, agricultural products, and e-commerce, while creating thousands of jobs and supporting the establishment of new businesses.
These developments are aligned with China’s strategy of promoting rural development and strengthening domestic consumption.
Choucair noted that the experience reflects a change in capital-allocation strategies, as costly investment in professional sport increasingly gives way to lower-cost community models capable of producing a more direct economic impact.
Combining sporting competitions with cultural events and local markets creates a sustainable economic cycle that supports local communities and increases the appeal of tourism destinations.
He added that the model creates investment opportunities for financial institutions across sports tourism, rural infrastructure, digital marketing, and cultural products, alongside technological and artificial intelligence solutions for event management and improving the visitor experience.
Samer Choucair emphasized that the Chinese experience offers important lessons for countries seeking to diversify their economies, particularly Gulf states.
Community sport can be used as an instrument for strengthening local development and supporting tourism and entertainment in line with regional economic-diversification objectives.
Concluding his remarks, Samer Choucair said investors capable of identifying structural changes at an early stage will be best positioned to benefit from future opportunities.
He emphasized that investment in local communities and the experience economy has become one of the most important trends likely to shape tourism and entertainment markets in the years ahead.
