Maddison and Teagan Levi: Australia”s Sister Act Taking Rugby Sevens by Storm
Few sibling pairings in world rugby have made as big an impact as Maddison and Teagan Levi. The Gold Coast raised sisters have gone from junior dance students to genuine stars of the HSBC SVNS World Series, becoming two of the most feared attacking players in the women's game while representing Australia together on the biggest stages in the sport.
From Ballet to Ballymore
Growing up on the Gold Coast, Maddison and Teagan were originally dancers, training in jazz, ballet and hip hop. Their path into rugby began after Australia's sevens team made its debut at the Rio 2016 Olympics, sparking their interest in the sport. A visit to Ballymore, where they watched the national squad train and met stars like Ellia Green and Charlotte Caslick, helped set both sisters on course for professional rugby.
Maddison, born in April 2002, attended Miami State High School and came through the school's Rugby Sevens Excellence Program, later being named player of the tournament at the Under-17 Youth Rugby Sevens National Championships. Teagan, born in August 2003, followed a similar path through junior representative rugby before joining her older sister in the senior program.
Crossover Athletes
Both sisters showed enough talent to be drafted into the AFL Women's competition with the Gold Coast Suns, Maddison with pick 50 in 2020 and Teagan with pick six in 2021. Maddison played a full AFLW season in 2021 before committing fully to rugby sevens, while Teagan chose to join the national sevens squad straight away rather than pursue her AFLW career.
Rising Together
The sisters made their World Sevens Series debuts together in Dubai during the 2021 to 2022 season. Maddison was named Rookie of the Year and picked in the Series Dream Team after scoring 24 tries in her debut campaign, while Teagan quickly established herself as a regular in the squad. Together they helped Australia win the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham and the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town, where Maddison scored a hat trick in the final.
Maddison Levi's Record Breaking Rise
Maddison has since become one of the most prolific try scorers in sevens history. She became the fastest Australian woman to reach 100 tries on the World Series, then went on to become the first Australian, and just the third player ever, to reach 200 series tries in 2025. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, she scored a tournament record 14 tries as Australia finished fourth, and was later named World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year for 2024 after scoring a record 69 tries in the calendar year.
Teagan's Growing Impact
Teagan has continued to build her own reputation within the squad, contributing consistently through the 2025 to 2026 SVNS season, including tries against South Africa at the Hong Kong Sevens and in the final of the 2026 Spain Sevens in Valladolid, which Australia won. She also linked up with the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby Women's, part of a broader push from several Australian sevens players to build depth ahead of a home World Cup campaign.
Committed to Australia
In January 2026, both sisters signed contract extensions with Rugby Australia through the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, a move Rugby Australia's high performance director called a major win for the women's program. Between them, the Levi sisters have combined Commonwealth Games gold, a World Cup title, individual Player of the Year honours, and record breaking try scoring feats, all while doing it side by side in the same team.
A Bond Beyond Rugby
What sets the Levis apart is not just their skill but their bond. Their father has followed them to Olympic tournaments to watch them play together, and both sisters have spoken about how special it is to share their careers with each other. As Australia builds toward Los Angeles 2028, the Levi sisters remain central to the program's ambitions, both individually and as a duo.
