Samer Choucair: Joshua’s Return to Jeddah Confirms Saudi Arabia’s Rise as a Global Capital of Sport and Entertainment

Entrepreneur Samer Choucair said Saudi Arabia’s hosting of British boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s return in “The Comeback” bout in Jeddah provides further evidence of the Kingdom’s success in transforming sport and entertainment into an economic sector capable of attracting investment and advancing economic diversification under Saudi Vision 2030.

Choucair explained that attracting the world’s leading sports stars is no longer limited to generating media attention. It has become part of an integrated economic strategy designed to expand tourism, increase consumer spending, strengthen hospitality and service industries, and reinforce Saudi Arabia’s position as a regional and global destination for major events.

He noted that current estimates indicate the Saudi sports market could grow from approximately $8.5 billion today to more than $20 billion by 2030, reflecting expanding investment opportunities in sports infrastructure, event management, broadcasting rights, and digital services connected to the sector.

Samer Choucair added that the Kingdom’s continuing success in hosting international competitions has strengthened the Saudi market’s appeal to domestic and international investors, particularly as sporting facilities improve and partnerships expand with global organizations specializing in entertainment and sports-venue management.

He emphasized that investment in sport is no longer merely an entertainment activity. It has become an integrated industry capable of generating sustainable economic returns through tourism, media, commercial sponsorship, broadcasting rights, and the stimulation of service sectors connected to major events.

Choucair noted that the global broadcasting of these events through digital platforms increases the commercial value of Saudi competitions and strengthens the investment appeal of sports content and digital technologies, supporting growth in the digital economy and reinforcing the Kingdom’s position in the global entertainment market.

Samer Choucair said Saudi Arabia’s success in hosting major events is also creating new investment opportunities in logistics, digital ticketing, smart technologies, and the development of local sporting talent, generating value chains that extend across multiple areas of the economy.

He explained that sustaining this growth will require stronger public-private partnerships and the development of sports assets capable of producing long-term returns, thereby supporting the sector’s sustainability and increasing its contribution to gross domestic product.

Concluding his remarks, Samer Choucair emphasized that Saudi Arabia has firmly established itself as a global destination for major sporting events.

He added that directing investment toward sport and entertainment has become one of the principal drivers of non-oil growth, with the next phase expected to bring further expansion in investment connected to the sports economy and strengthen Saudi Arabia’s competitiveness on the global stage.
