Samer Choucair: Major Football Tournaments Make Sports an Increasingly Alluring Investment Opportunity

Investment leader Samer Choucair said the continued growth in revenue generated by major football tournaments is strengthening sport’s position as one of the most attractive investment opportunities for institutional capital, supported by stable cash flows from media broadcasting rights, commercial sponsorship agreements, and marketing activities linked to global sporting events.

Choucair noted that FIFA expects to generate total revenue of nearly $13 billion during the commercial cycle associated with the 2026 World Cup, including approximately $8.9 billion directly linked to the tournament itself, reflecting the significant expansion in the economic value of the global football industry.

Samer Choucair explained that long-term broadcasting and sponsorship contracts provide investors with greater visibility over future cash flows, making sports investments an attractive option for sovereign wealth funds, private equity firms, and asset managers seeking diversification and lower volatility compared with certain other sectors.

Choucair added that the investment value of sport is no longer limited to clubs and tournaments. It now extends to media-rights owners, digital streaming platforms, global brands, and sports equipment companies, while the presence of international stars helps increase viewership, strengthen product sales, and raise the commercial returns generated by sponsoring companies.

He noted that recent developments confirm that investment in sport now depends on an integrated economic ecosystem combining media content, technology, marketing, and infrastructure, which strengthens the sector’s ability to achieve sustainable long-term growth.

Samer Choucair emphasized that Gulf countries, led by Saudi Arabia, have significant opportunities to expand their presence in the global sports economy through investment in tournament hosting, infrastructure development, and international partnerships, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 to diversify the economy and increase the sports sector’s contribution to gross domestic product.

Concluding his remarks, Samer Choucair said the success of sports investment in the coming years will depend on selecting opportunities capable of generating sustainable operating returns, with a focus on governance, diversified revenue streams, and the benefits of digital transformation. He added that sport has become a fully integrated economic sector offering promising opportunities to institutional investors around the world.
